Canada Post Strike - Update

Canada Post has resumed operation and is working as quickly as possible to process and deliver mail.  Students should now return to using the original methods of negotiating their student loan documents by going into their nearest Canada Post Outlet or using on-campus kiosks as available.  In order to submit information to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office, students may continue to mail, fax or email their requests as applicable.  The National Student Loans Service Center and Resolve may experience some delay in sending and receiveing mail.  If students have questions in regard to their loan disbursements they may contact the National Student Loans Servie Center at 1-888-815-4514 or Resolve at 1-877-283-1687.  Any questions relating to the assessment of student loans may be directed to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office at 1-800-565-8420.

Canada Post Strike

Due to the Canada Post Strike activities that are occurring across the country with rotating postal strikes, the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office has put temporary processes in place to attempt to reduce student impact as much as possible.  The following are the steps to follow in order to receive your student loan document:

  • Students who live within commuting distance to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office will have their loan documents held on site at the office, 2021 Brunswick St, Halifax, for pick up by students if their period of study end date is within two weeks.  These students will be contacted by the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office to advise they can come in and pick up documents.  Students will be required to present ID in order to pick up the documents.
  • Students who are not able to come in to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office and who have a period of study end date within the two week time frame will be able to pick up their student loan documents at the educational institution they are attending.  The Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office will courier the document to the educational institution and will inform the student when the document can be picked up.
  •  Students who are attending educational institutions via online or correspondence courses and are not able to access their educational institution will have their student loan document couriered to the address the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office has on file for them.

All students are responsible for getting their loan documents to the National Student Loans Service Center (NSLSC) and Resolve for Nova Scotia Student loans in order to have their funds disbursed to them.  Students should check with their educational institution to determine if there has been a process set up there for sending documents to the NSLSC or Resolve.  If there is no process set up by the educational institution, students may send their documents to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office by one of two methods:

  •  Documents may be couriered to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office directly to:

       Brunswick Place
       2021 Brunswick St
       Halifax, Nova Scotia
       B3K 2Y5

The office will have the documents forwarded to the NSLSC or Resolve.

  •  In the event of a full-scale strike, Access Nova Scotia Offices across Nova Scotia will have drop boxes available where documents may be dropped off to be forwarded on to the Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office via internal government mail.  It is very important students clearly address the envelop as follows:

Department of Labour and Advanced Education
       Nova Scotia Student Assistance Office
       2021 Brunswick Street, 4th floor
       Halifax, Nova Scotia
       B3K 2Y5

The office will have the documents forwarded to the NSLSC or Resolve.

PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that students follow the instructions included with their loan documents in order to ensure they include all additional documentation required to process their loan.  Students should contact the Nova Scotia Student Assistance office if they have any questions.

These measures will remain in place as long as there is a risk of disruption to postal services.  Any updates to the process will be posted to the website as soon as possible.
